Autumn Wedding Stationery Ideas: Invitations, Colours and Table Stationery for a UK Autumn Wedding
By Beth, founder of Graceful Studio · Updated

Autumn is one of the loveliest times of year to get married in the UK: golden light, rich colours, cosy venues and flowers like dahlias at their very best. Your autumn wedding stationery is the first hint of all that for your guests. This guide covers autumn wedding colour palettes, invitation ideas and motifs, envelopes and wax seals, when to send your invitations, table stationery, and ideas for barns, country houses and woodland venues.
A quick, honest note before we start: most of our designs are floral and botanical rather than a dedicated autumn collection. One design, our barn owl invitation, was drawn with autumn in mind, and several others look beautifully autumnal with the right envelope, ribbon and wax seal. We’ll show you which ones, and how.
Autumn wedding colour palettes
Autumn wedding colours take their cue from the hedgerows and the harvest: warm earth tones, deep berries and soft greens. Pick one main colour, one neutral and one metallic, and repeat them on everything from your envelopes to your napkins:
| Palette | The feel | Flowers | Envelope and wax seal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terracotta, cream and gold | Warm and modern | Rust roses, dahlias, dried grasses | Terracotta envelope, gold wax seal |
| Ochre, mustard and sage | Golden, harvest-time | Sunflowers, rudbeckia, wheat, eucalyptus | Kraft or fern envelope, gold wax seal |
| Burgundy, blush and ivory | Romantic and rich | Burgundy dahlias, blush roses, berries | Luxury ivory or blush envelope, a deep wax seal colour |
| Sage, olive and gold | Soft, green and elegant | Olive branches, white roses, foliage | Fern or ivy envelope, sage ribbon |
| Peach, rust and oat | Gentle and sunlit | Peach and toffee roses, ranunculus, oats | Oat envelope, gold wax seal |
Darker shades come into their own later in the season. A September wedding can still feel light, with peach, ochre and sage; by November, burgundy, ivy and midnight feel cosy rather than heavy. If you’re torn, take your colours from your flowers: dahlias alone come in almost every autumn shade.
Blue works in autumn too. Dusty blue with terracotta or burnt orange is a striking pairing, and our dusty blue wedding ideas cover it in more detail.
Autumn wedding invitation ideas: motifs to look for
The quickest way to make an invitation feel autumnal is the illustration. These are the motifs that say “autumn” without needing a single falling leaf:
- Wheat, oats and grasses: a nod to the harvest, lovely around the edge of the card.
- Barn owls: quietly magical, and perfect for a barn or countryside wedding.
- Sunflowers and rudbeckia: warm, cheerful and in season into September.
- Dried flowers and seed heads: soft, muted and very current.
- Pumpkins, mushrooms and berries: small, playful details tucked into a floral border.
- Trailing foliage: climbing stems and leaves in olive, ochre and rust.
Our autumn floral barn owl invitation brings several of these together: a barn owl in flight at the top, climbing borders of sunflowers and blush flowers, and a little pumpkin, mushroom and wheat ears at the foot of the card. At the time of writing, it’s £1.99 for the invitation and envelope, or £4 for the full suite with a details card, RSVP card and wax seal.

Which of our designs suit an autumn wedding?
Beyond the barn owl, several of our floral and botanical designs adapt well to autumn. It’s mostly about choosing the right colours around them:
- The [watercolour wildflower invitation set](/shop/wedding-invitations/watercolour-wildflower-wedding-invitation) has red, orange and burgundy flowers in its meadow border. Pair it with a dark envelope and rust or peach silk ribbon and it feels like late summer turning to autumn.
- The [olive green botanical menu & place card](/shop/wedding-menus/olive-green-botanical-wildflower-wedding-menu) is drawn in soft grey line art with an olive satin bow: understated and perfect for a sage and gold palette.
- The [soft floral wildflower menu](/shop/wedding-menus/soft-floral-wildflower-wedding-menu) has gold lettering and delicate flowers that sit happily alongside toffee and peach roses.
- Colour changes: on many of our designs we can change the background colour and tweak the flower colours, so a pink flower might become rust or ochre. Ask us when you order.

Envelope colours for autumn wedding invitations
An envelope is the cheapest way to make any invitation feel seasonal. Of our twelve envelope colours, these suit autumn best:
- Terracotta: a warm, burnt orange that makes ivory card glow. The most autumnal choice of all.
- Kraft: natural brown, rustic and relaxed. Ideal for a barn wedding.
- Oat: a soft, warm neutral that suits peach and gold palettes and feels more elegant than kraft.
- Ivy: a deep green for woodland weddings and late autumn.
- Midnight: deep navy, lovely for November and evening receptions.

We can also print your guests’ names on the envelopes in the same font as your invitation. Printing in a dark ink shows up beautifully on terracotta and kraft.
Wax seals and finishing touches
A few finishing touches turn a pretty autumn invitation into something guests keep:
- Gold wax seals suit almost every autumn palette, from terracotta to sage. Our barn owl design is shown with gold seals.
- Silk ribbon with frayed edges in rust, peach or olive feels relaxed and seasonal.
- Twine suits kraft envelopes and barn weddings.
- Vellum jackets add a misty, layered first look, and are available on request with the barn owl design.
- A sprig of dried wheat or lavender tucked under the ribbon, if you’re assembling them yourself.
For more on combining them, see our guide to wax seal, vellum and ribbon invitations.
When to send autumn wedding invitations
Send autumn wedding invitations about four months before the day, as you would for any UK wedding. Our guide to when to send wedding invitations explains the full timeline, but here it is worked through for an autumn date, Saturday 16th October 2027:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| October 2026 – January 2027 | Send save the dates (9–12 months before) |
| Early May 2027 | Order samples, choose your design and send your details |
| Mid-May to early June 2027 | Approve your proof; your invitations are made (1–4 weeks) |
| Mid-June 2027 | Post your invitations, about four months before |
| Friday 3rd September 2027 | RSVP deadline, about six weeks before |
| September 2027 | Order on-the-day stationery once numbers are in |
Autumn dates come with one UK quirk worth knowing: October half term. If your wedding falls in the second half of October, families with children may be planning holidays, so a save the date and a prompt invitation help. Early September weddings also land in the busy back-to-school weeks, so a clear RSVP date matters.
Autumn wedding table stationery
Carry your autumn palette through to the wedding breakfast. A few ideas:
- Seasonal menus: let autumn dishes shine, with a warm metallic for the headings. Our menu wording ideas have layouts to copy.
- Menu and place card in one: a name tag tied to each menu with an olive or rust ribbon means one piece per place setting.
- Table names instead of numbers: orchards, hedgerow berries or the woods you walk in. Our table name ideas include an autumn list.
- Wooden stands and slices of log for table numbers in a barn; gold stands for a country house.
- Napkins in rust, sage or oatmeal, with a sprig of rosemary, wheat or eucalyptus on each plate.
- A pear, a mini pumpkin or a small jar of honey at each place, which doubles as a seasonal detail and a token for guests.

Autumn wedding stationery ideas by venue
Barn weddings
Barns suit warm, rustic autumn stationery: kraft or terracotta envelopes, twine, wheat and dried flowers. Choose illustrations with a little life in them, like the barn owl or a wildflower meadow, and stand table numbers in wooden holders among bottles of dried flowers and fairy lights.

Country house weddings
A country house in autumn calls for something a little more polished: ivory card, an oat or luxury ivory envelope, gold wax seals and silk ribbon. Fine-line botanical menus, tall gold table number stands and burgundy or ochre flowers keep it elegant rather than rustic.
Woodland and outdoor weddings
For a woodland or forest wedding, lean into deep greens: an ivy envelope, olive ribbon, foliage-led designs and lots of candlelight. Small details like mushrooms, acorns or ferns in your flowers and table settings tie it together.
Not sure which style fits your venue? Our guide to choosing wedding invitations matches styles to venues, and our wildflower wedding stationery ideas has more on meadow designs.

Frequently asked questions
What colours are best for an autumn wedding?
+
Warm, earthy palettes work best: terracotta and cream, ochre with sage, burgundy with blush, sage and olive with gold, or peach, rust and oat. Choose one main colour, one neutral and one metallic.
When should I send invitations for an autumn wedding?
+
About four months before the day, so mid-June for a mid-October wedding. Send save the dates 9–12 months ahead and set your RSVP date around six weeks before the wedding.
What envelope colour suits an autumn wedding invitation?
+
Terracotta is the most autumnal choice. Kraft suits a rustic barn wedding, oat feels warm and elegant, ivy suits woodland weddings, and midnight works well in November.
What should an autumn wedding invitation look like?
+
Ivory or white card with warm illustrations such as wheat, sunflowers, barn owls, dried flowers or trailing foliage, finished with a coloured envelope, a gold wax seal and perhaps silk ribbon or twine.
Can I use floral wedding invitations for an autumn wedding?
+
Yes. Choose a design with warm reds, oranges and ochres, or ask for the flower colours to be adjusted, then pair it with a terracotta, kraft or ivy envelope and autumnal ribbon.
What colour wax seal suits an autumn wedding?
+
Gold suits almost every autumn palette. Ivory or pearl keeps it soft, while deeper shades suit burgundy and ivy schemes.
What stationery do I need for an autumn barn wedding?
+
Invitations with an RSVP and details card, then menus, place cards, table numbers or names and a seating plan on the day. Kraft envelopes, twine and wooden table number stands suit a barn.
