# Wedding Invitation Samples: Why to Order Them First and What to Look For in a Sample Pack

**Short answer:** Order wedding invitation samples before you commit, because a screen can’t show you card weight, texture, true colours or print quality. A good sample pack contains the real invitation, its inserts and envelope, so you can open it as a guest would. Order two or three designs as soon as you’re choosing.

Wedding invitation samples are the cheapest insurance you’ll buy all year. For the price of a coffee, you get the real invitation in your hands: the card, the colours, the ribbon and the envelope your guests will open. It’s the only way to know you love it before you order fifty. This guide explains why samples matter, what should be in a good sample pack, and exactly how to judge one when it lands on your doormat.

## Why order wedding invitation samples?

Photos are styled, lit and edited to look their best. Your invitation will be opened at a kitchen table under ordinary light. A sample closes that gap in five ways:

- **Card weight and texture.** You can’t feel gsm through a screen. Hold the card and you’ll know straight away whether it feels substantial or flimsy, and whether the texture suits the design.
- **True colours.** Every phone and laptop shows colour differently. Blush can read as peach, dusty blue as grey. A sample shows you the real shade next to your bridesmaid fabric or flower photos.
- **Print quality.** Fine illustration lines, small text on the RSVP card and soft watercolour edges are where print quality shows. You’ll only see it up close.
- **How it feels to open.** Sliding a suite out of its envelope, untying the ribbon, lifting a vellum jacket: that first moment is what your guests will remember, and you can only test it in person.
- **Confidence for everyone else.** If parents are contributing or opinions are flying, a sample on the table settles debates far faster than a link.

## What’s in our wedding invitation sample packs

A good wedding invitation sample pack should contain the real thing: the same invitation, inserts, envelope and finishing touches you’d order for your guests, not a cut-down swatch. Here’s what each of ours includes, taken from the product listings. Prices are at the time of writing.

| Sample pack | Price | What’s included |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [The Grace Wildflower Sample Pack](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/sample-packs/grace-wildflower-invitation-sample-pack) | £3.99 | 5×7" invitation and envelope, details card (120 × 120 mm), A7 RSVP card and envelope, silver or gold clip, ribbon or twine, wax seal and vellum jacket |
| [Wildflower Invitation Suite Sample](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/sample-packs/wildflower-invitation-suite-sample) | £2 standard, £6 personalised | 5×7" invitation and envelope, details card, A7 RSVP card and envelope, silver or gold clip and ribbon, on natural textured card |
| [Dusty Blue Toile Sample Pack](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/sample-packs/dusty-blue-toile-invitation-sample-pack) | £2.99 | Oval invitation and envelope, oval initials card, 5×7" details card, ribbon and wax seal |
| [Soft Pastel Floral Sample Pack](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/sample-packs/soft-pastel-floral-invitation-sample-pack) | £3.99 | Invitation and envelope, details card, ribbon and wax seal |

Some invitation pages also offer a “Full Suite Sample” option, so you can sample a design that doesn’t have its own pack. At the time of writing, a full suite sample of our [autumn floral barn owl invitation](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/wedding-invitations/autumn-floral-barn-owl-wedding-invitation) is £2.99, and of [the Grace wildflower set](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/wedding-invitations/grace-wildflower-wedding-invitation-set) is £3.99.

When you order, send us a message with the envelope colour you’d like in your pack. It’s worth choosing the colour you’re actually considering, because the envelope changes the whole look. If you’d like to see an extra such as an envelope liner, a different wax seal colour or envelope printing, ask: these are available on request on many designs.

## Standard or personalised sample?

A **standard sample** shows the design with example names and wording. It’s quick, inexpensive and tells you everything about the card, colours, print and finishing touches. A **personalised sample** is made with your own names, date, venue and wording, so you see exactly how your invitation will read.

| | Standard sample | Personalised sample |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shows | The design with example wording | Your names, date, venue and wording |
| Price (our wildflower suite sample, at the time of writing) | £2 | £6 |
| How long it takes | Sent within 4 days | About 1 week, once your details and mock-up are confirmed |
| Best for | Comparing several designs | Checking how your wording fits the one you’ve chosen |

Most couples get the best of both: standard samples of two or three designs to choose between, then a personalised sample (or simply a careful look at the digital proof) for the winner. A personalised sample is especially useful if your wording is long, your names are long, or you’re including a lot on the details card.

### Wording to test on a personalised sample

If you’re wondering how much text a design can hold, test both ends. These two versions of the same invitation show the shortest and longest wording most couples use:

Short and relaxed:

> Together with their families
> Emily Carter & Tom Hughes
> invite you to celebrate their marriage
> Saturday 12th June 2027 at 1pm
> Hartwell Barn, Ludlow
> Reception to follow

Long and traditional:

> Mr and Mrs David Carter
> request the pleasure of your company
> at the marriage of their daughter
> Emily Rose
> to
> Thomas James Hughes
> on Saturday 12th June 2027 at half past one
> at Hartwell Barn, Ludlow
> and afterwards for the wedding breakfast

If the long version looks crowded, move the extra lines to the details card. For more ways to phrase it, see our [wedding invitation wording examples](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/wedding-invitation-wording-examples-uk) and our guide to [what to put on a wedding details card](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/what-to-put-on-wedding-details-card).

## How to judge a wedding invitation sample: a checklist

When your samples arrive, don’t just admire them. Work through this list, ideally with all your samples side by side:

- **Weight.** Hold the invitation by one corner. Does it stay upright or flop? It should feel at least as sturdy as a good greetings card. (Our [guide to choosing invitations](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-to-choose-wedding-invitations-uk) explains gsm if you want the numbers.)
- **Texture.** Run a fingertip across it. Does the texture suit the design, and does small text still look crisp on it?
- **Colour.** Look at it by a window in daylight and again under warm lamplight in the evening. Hold it against your colour inspiration: a fabric swatch, a flower photo, your bridesmaid dress.
- **Print detail.** Check fine lines, soft watercolour edges and the smallest text, such as the reply-by date. Everything should be sharp and even.
- **Cutting.** Edges should be clean and straight, corners square, and any oval or rounded cut smooth.
- **Readability.** Ask the person in your family with the worst eyesight to read it. Script fonts are beautiful, but names and times must be clear.
- **Fit.** Does everything slide into the envelope easily, and does it close flat with the ribbon and wax seal in place?
- **Finishing touches.** Is the ribbon neatly tied, the wax seal secure and the vellum straight? This is the standard your guests will receive.
- **The opening moment.** Put it back in the envelope, hand it to someone and watch them open it. What do they see first?
- **Postage.** Measure the thickness of the finished suite. Royal Mail’s Letter size stops at 5 mm thick, so anything chunkier costs more to post.

Write the price per invitation, the minimum order and the lead time on a sticky note and put it on the back of each sample. When you compare them a week later, you’ll compare the full picture, not just the prettiest one.

## Comparing wedding invitation samples from different suppliers

It’s completely normal to order samples from more than one stationer, and a good one won’t mind. To compare fairly, look beyond the design itself:

| Compare | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| Price at your quantity | Is the price per invitation for the whole suite, including envelopes and inserts? Is there a minimum order? |
| What the sample includes | Is it the full suite with finishing touches, or only the main card? |
| Personalisation | Can fonts, colours and wording be changed, and is that included in the price? |
| Proofs | When will you see a proof, and how quickly are changes turned round? |
| Lead times | How long from approving the proof to the invitations arriving? |
| Assembly | Will the invitations arrive assembled, or will you be tying ribbons at midnight? |
| Matching pieces | Can you order save the dates, menus and table numbers in the same design later? |

For context on what’s a fair price, our [wedding invitation cost guide](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-much-do-wedding-invitations-cost-uk) breaks down costs per invitation and for 50, 100 and 150 guests. And if you’re weighing a ready-made design against a fully custom one, read our guide to [bespoke vs semi-custom wedding stationery](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/bespoke-vs-semi-custom-wedding-stationery).

## When should you order wedding invitation samples?

Order samples as soon as you’re choosing a design, ideally once your venue and date are booked. For most couples that’s somewhere around 6–9 months before the wedding, or earlier if you’re sending save the dates in the same design. There’s no such thing as too early: a sample costs little and saves a rushed decision later.

- **Standard sample packs** are sent within 4 days.
- **Personalised samples** take about a week, once your details, mock-up and envelope colour are confirmed.
- Orders travel by **Royal Mail First Class** (or **Tracked & Signed For** on orders of £80 or more), which usually arrives 1–2 working days after posting.

So allow roughly a week from ordering a standard pack to holding it. Lead times change through the year, so check our [delivery and lead times page](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/delivery) for the latest. Once you’ve chosen, our [timeline for sending wedding invitations](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/when-to-send-wedding-invitations-uk) shows when to place the full order.

## Are there free wedding invitation samples?

Sometimes, yes. Some large online printers offer free sample kits by post, or credit the cost of a sample against a later order. They’re worth knowing about, but look at what you’d actually receive: free kits are often a mix of generic designs or paper swatches rather than the exact invitation, inserts and finishing touches you’re considering.

Our samples aren’t free. Each one is made in our UK studio just like a real invitation, with the same card, envelope, ribbon and wax seal, and that’s exactly what makes it useful. At the time of writing they start at £2, so ordering three designs to compare costs less than £10 plus delivery.

## Order your sample pack

Choose two or three designs you’re torn between, pick your envelope colour, and judge them with the checklist above. It’s the simplest way to order your invitations with total confidence.

Questions:

- **Should I order wedding invitation samples?** Yes. A sample is the only way to check card weight, texture, true colours and print quality before you order every invitation. It costs a few pounds and can save you from ordering 50 of something you’re not sure about.
- **What is in a wedding invitation sample pack?** A good sample pack contains the real invitation and envelope plus the inserts and finishing touches, such as a details card, RSVP card, ribbon and wax seal. Our Grace wildflower pack also includes a vellum jacket and a silver or gold clip.
- **How much do wedding invitation samples cost in the UK?** Prices vary by stationer. At the time of writing, our sample packs cost £2 to £3.99 for a standard sample, and our wildflower invitation suite sample is £6 personalised, plus UK delivery.
- **Are wedding invitation samples free?** Some large online printers offer free sample kits or credit the cost against an order, though these are often generic designs or paper swatches. Ours are not free; each one is made like a real invitation, with the same card and finishing touches.
- **What is the difference between a standard and a personalised sample?** A standard sample shows the design with example wording and is quicker and cheaper. A personalised sample is made with your own names, date, venue and wording, so you can see exactly how your invitation will read.
- **When should I order wedding invitation samples?** As soon as you’re choosing a design, usually once your venue and date are booked. Our standard sample packs are sent within 4 days and personalised samples take about a week.
- **How many wedding invitation samples should I order?** Two or three is ideal: enough to compare designs side by side without making the choice harder. Order them in the envelope colours you’re genuinely considering.
- **Can I choose the envelope colour for my sample?** Yes. After ordering one of our sample packs, send us a message with the envelope colour you’d like, from our twelve colours including blush, terracotta, kraft, fern and midnight.
