# What to Write in a Wedding Thank You Card: UK Wording Examples for Every Guest

**Short answer:** A wedding thank you card should name the gift, say how you’ll use or enjoy it, thank the guest for being part of your day and end with a personal line. For money, mention what you’ll spend it on rather than the amount. In the UK, aim to send them within three months of the wedding.

The wedding’s over, the gifts are unwrapped and there’s a pile of blank cards on the kitchen table. Knowing what to write in a wedding thank you card is easier than it feels: a few warm, specific sentences beat a page of flowery prose every time. Below you’ll find a simple formula, when to send them, and wording examples for every guest on your list, from money and honeymoon funds to parents, the bridal party and the friends who couldn’t make it.

## When to send wedding thank you cards

In the UK, the usual guidance is to send your thank you cards **within about three months of the wedding**. Sooner is lovelier, especially for close family, but nobody expects them the week you get back from honeymoon.

- **Gifts that arrive before the wedding:** thank the guest within two or three weeks if you can, or keep a note and include it in your main batch.
- **Gifts given on the day:** aim for within three months.
- **Running late?** Send them anyway. A heartfelt card at five months is far better than none (there’s wording for that below).

Write five a night instead of fifty in a weekend. Split the list between you, keep it by the kettle, and you’ll be done in a couple of weeks without it feeling like homework.

## What to write in a wedding thank you card: a simple formula

Almost every good thank you note follows the same shape. Use it as a checklist and each card takes five minutes:

1. **Greet them by name.** “Dear Auntie Sue”, not “Dear guest”.
2. **Name the gift.** Say exactly what it was, so they know it arrived safely.
3. **Say how you’ll use or enjoy it.** This is the line that makes it personal.
4. **Thank them for being there** (or for thinking of you if they couldn’t come).
5. **Add one memory from the day**: their speech, their dancing, the fact they made it from Aberdeen.
6. **Look ahead**: “We can’t wait to have you over for dinner.”
7. **Sign off warmly** with both your names.

Put together, it looks like this:

The formula in action:

> Dear Auntie Sue and Uncle Pete,
> Thank you so much for the beautiful cast iron casserole dish. It’s already had its first outing (a slightly ambitious beef stew) and it’s going to be in use every Sunday from now on.
> It meant the world to have you both with us on the day, and Uncle Pete, your moves on the dance floor will be talked about for years.
> You’ll have to come round and try the stew soon.
> With love,
> Amy & Tom

## Wedding thank you messages to guests

Most of your cards will go to guests who came and brought a gift from your list. Keep these short and specific. Here are a few to adapt:

Gift list present:

> Dear Priya and Josh,
> Thank you for the gorgeous bedding from our gift list. It’s made our bedroom feel like a hotel, and we’re finding it very hard to get up in the mornings.
> We loved celebrating with you both. Thank you for making our day so special.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

A gift that wasn’t on the list:

> Dear Margaret,
> Thank you so much for the framed print of the church. What a thoughtful idea. It’s hanging in the hallway, so it’s the first thing we see when we come home.
> It was wonderful to see you at the wedding, and thank you for coming such a long way.
> With love,
> Amy & Tom

Short and sweet, for a friend:

> Hannah,
> Thank you for the cocktail set! The espresso martinis have been flowing ever since. Thank you for being there, for the best hugs and for leading the conga.
> Love you lots,
> Amy & Tom x

## What to write in a wedding thank you card for money

Thanking someone for money, a cheque or a contribution to a honeymoon fund can feel awkward, but it doesn’t need to be. The rule is simple: **mention the gift and tell them what you’ll spend it on, but don’t mention the amount.** Saying “your generous gift” covers it beautifully. If you asked for money on your invitations, our guide on [how to ask for money as a wedding gift](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-to-ask-for-money-wedding-gift-uk) has wording for that side of things too.

Cash or cheque:

> Dear Mr and Mrs Patel,
> Thank you so much for your generous gift. We’re putting it towards a new dining table, so there’ll be room for everyone at Christmas this year.
> It was lovely to see you both at the wedding. Thank you for celebrating with us.
> Best wishes,
> Amy & Tom

Honeymoon fund:

> Dear Grandma,
> Thank you for your incredibly kind contribution to our honeymoon. Thanks to you, we enjoyed a very special dinner overlooking the sea in Santorini, and we raised a glass to you.
> Having you there on our wedding day meant more than we can say.
> All our love,
> Amy & Tom

Saving for a house:

> Dear Claire and Rob,
> Thank you for your generous gift. It’s gone straight into our house fund, and we’re a big step closer to our first home. You’ll be first on the list for the housewarming.
> Thank you for being part of our day.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

Gift voucher:

> Dear Sam,
> Thank you for the voucher. We’ve had great fun choosing a new set of wine glasses, so we’ll think of you every time we use them.
> Thank you for coming and helping us celebrate.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

## Wedding thank you card wording for someone who didn’t attend

Guests who couldn’t come but sent a card or a gift deserve a thank you just as much. Acknowledge that they were missed and, if it feels right, share a little of the day with them. These work for anyone who sent their apologies, and for someone who wasn’t invited but kindly sent a gift anyway.

Couldn’t make it, sent a gift:

> Dear Lisa and Mark,
> Thank you so much for the lovely vase. It’s already full of flowers from the wedding, so it’s the perfect reminder of the day.
> We missed you on the day, but we felt the love from afar. We’ve enclosed a photo so you can see a little of it.
> Hope to see you very soon,
> Amy & Tom

Weren’t invited, but sent a gift:

> Dear Jean,
> What a wonderful surprise to receive your card and the beautiful photo frame. It was so kind of you to think of us. It now holds our favourite picture from the day.
> Thank you for your warm wishes; they meant a great deal.
> With love,
> Amy & Tom

## What to write in a wedding thank you card when there was no gift

Do you send thank you cards to everyone who attended your wedding, even without a gift? You don’t have to, but it’s a gracious touch, especially for guests who travelled, helped out or simply made the day better. Thank them for their presence, never mention the absence of a present.

Thank you for coming:

> Dear Ollie and Grace,
> Thank you so much for coming to celebrate with us. Having you there made the day, and we still laugh about the photo booth pictures.
> We can’t wait to see you again soon.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

### For guests who travelled a long way

Travelled far:

> Dear Fiona and Ewan,
> Thank you for making the long journey down from Inverness, and for the beautiful whisky glasses. We know what a trek it was, and it meant so much to look out and see you there.
> Next time, we’ll come to you.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

## Wedding thank you card wording for parents

Thank you cards to parents are the ones people keep. Whether they hosted, contributed financially or just held everything together, this is your chance to say what you might not have managed in the speeches. Write it by hand, and don’t rush it.

To the bride’s parents:

> Dear Mum and Dad,
> There aren’t enough words to thank you for everything you did to make our wedding so perfect: the planning, the generosity, the calm when the marquee was late. Dad, walking down the aisle with you is a memory I’ll treasure forever.
> Thank you for welcoming Tom into the family with such open arms. We love you both so much.
> All our love,
> Amy & Tom

To parents-in-law:

> Dear Linda and Paul,
> Thank you for your incredible generosity towards our wedding, and for all the support along the way. Your help with the flowers made the day look more beautiful than we’d imagined.
> I feel so lucky to be part of your family.
> With love,
> Amy & Tom

## Thank you notes for the bridal party

Bridesmaids, the maid of honour, the best man and ushers give up weekends, money and nerves for you. A personal note, alongside any gift you gave on the day, means a great deal.

To a bridesmaid or maid of honour:

> Dear Becky,
> Thank you for being the best maid of honour I could have asked for. From the hen do to the safety pins on the day, you thought of everything, and your speech had the whole room in tears.
> I couldn’t have done it without you.
> Love always,
> Amy x

To the best man:

> Dear Dan,
> Thanks for everything, mate: for keeping the rings safe, getting me there on time and a speech that was (mostly) suitable for Grandma. You were brilliant.
> Pint on me, very soon.
> Tom

## Thank you notes for your wedding suppliers

A short card to your venue team, photographer, florist or caterer is never expected, which is exactly why it’s remembered. If you were happy, a kind online review is the other gift small businesses treasure.

To a supplier:

> Dear Sophie and the team,
> Thank you for making our wedding day so effortless. Everything ran perfectly, and so many guests told us the food was the best they’d had at a wedding.
> We’ll be recommending you to everyone.
> With thanks,
> Amy & Tom

## Late wedding thank you card wording

If the months have slipped by, a brief, honest line at the start is all you need. Don’t over-apologise; just get to the thank you.

Sending them late:

> Dear Kate and Ali,
> We’re so sorry this card is reaching you later than we’d hoped. Life after the wedding has been a whirlwind, but we haven’t forgotten your lovely gift. The picnic set has been on every sunny weekend outing since.
> Thank you for celebrating with us.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

## How to sign wedding thank you cards

Most couples split the list and each write their share, but every card should come from both of you. Write in “we”, then sign both first names. It doesn’t matter whose name comes first; many couples put the writer’s name second, as if adding their partner’s first.

- **Warm and simple:** “Love, Amy & Tom” or “With love from Amy and Tom”.
- **For older relatives or colleagues:** “With best wishes, Amy and Tom”.
- **Showing off a new surname:** “Love, Amy and Tom Harper”, or “Amy and Tom (the new Mr and Mrs Harper)”.
- **Avoid** signing as “Mr and Mrs Harper” alone; it reads as a formal letter rather than a personal thank you.

Joint sign-off, one person writing:

> Tom and I can’t thank you enough for coming.
> Love,
> Amy & Tom

## Practical tips that make it easier

- **Keep a gift log from day one.** Note who gave what, and any card messages, as things arrive. On the night, ask someone you trust to keep cards and gifts together.
- **Do you have to hand write wedding thank yous?** It’s strongly preferred. If you’re using printed photo cards, add at least a few handwritten lines and your signatures.
- **One card per household**, just like your invitations, with a separate card for anyone who gave a separate gift.
- **Include a photo** if you have your pictures back. Guests who couldn’t come especially love one.
- **Address the envelopes properly.** The same etiquette applies as for invitations; our guide on [how to address wedding invitations](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-to-address-wedding-invitations-uk) covers couples, families and titles.

## Envelopes that save an evening

We don’t make thank you cards, but we do make addressing simpler. Our [printed guest name envelopes](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/envelopes/printed-guest-name-envelopes) can be ordered on their own, even if your stationery came from elsewhere: send us your guest list and we’ll print each name and address in a font of your choice, in any of our twelve envelope colours. At the time of writing they cost £1 each including the envelope; [get in touch](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/contact) first to check they’ll suit the size of your cards, and see our [delivery page](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/delivery) for current lead times.

Still planning, or helping a friend who is? Our [wedding stationery checklist](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/wedding-stationery-checklist-uk) covers everything from save the dates to the day itself, and when your first (paper) anniversary comes round, a personalised card makes a sweet keepsake.

Questions:

- **What do you write in a wedding thank you card?** Greet the guest by name, name the gift and say how you’ll use or enjoy it, thank them for being part of your day, add a personal memory and sign off with both your names. Three or four warm, specific sentences is plenty.
- **How long after the wedding should you send thank you cards?** In the UK, aim to send them within about three months of the wedding. Gifts that arrive before the day can be thanked within two or three weeks. If you’re later than that, still send them with a brief apology.
- **What do you write in a wedding thank you card for money?** Thank them for their “generous gift” and say what you’ll spend it on, such as your honeymoon, a house deposit or something for your home. Don’t mention the amount.
- **Do you send thank you cards to everyone who attended a wedding?** It isn’t compulsory, but it’s a lovely gesture. Everyone who gave a gift should receive one, and many couples also thank guests who travelled far or helped out, even without a gift.
- **What do you write in a wedding thank you card for someone who didn’t attend?** Thank them for the gift or card, say they were missed, and share a little of the day, perhaps with a photo. For example: “We missed you on the day, but we felt the love from afar.”
- **What do you write in a wedding thank you card when there was no gift?** Thank them warmly for coming and for helping make the day special, with a memory if you have one. Never mention that there wasn’t a gift.
- **How do you sign wedding thank you cards?** Write the card in “we” and sign with both first names, such as “Love, Amy & Tom”, even if only one of you wrote it. Adding your new surname is a nice touch, but avoid signing as “Mr and Mrs” alone.
- **Do you have to hand write wedding thank you cards?** Handwritten cards are strongly preferred because they feel personal. If you use printed photo cards, add a few handwritten lines and both your signatures to each one.
