# Wax Seal Wedding Invitations, Vellum and Ribbon: The Finishing Touches Explained

**Short answer:** Wax seal wedding invitations use a disc of pressed wax to close a vellum wrap, ribbon or envelope. Vellum is a translucent paper wrapped around the invitation, and ribbon ties the cards together or adds a bow. One or two finishes is usually enough, and together they can push postage up to a Large Letter.

Wax seal wedding invitations, vellum wraps and ribbon are the details guests notice before they’ve read a single word. They’re what turn a printed card into something that feels made by hand. Our [guide to choosing wedding invitations](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-to-choose-wedding-invitations-uk) touches on them briefly; this post goes much further, finish by finish: what each one is, the colours and looks that suit it, how they affect your postage, and how to combine them without overdoing it.

## The three finishes at a glance

| Finish | What it adds | Suits | Postage |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Wax seal** | A little weight and ceremony, and a spot of colour | Almost every style, from classic to rustic | Adds 2–4 mm of thickness |
| **Vellum** | A soft, misty first look and a layered feel | Romantic, botanical and minimal designs | Adds very little on its own |
| **Ribbon or twine** | Colour, texture and a hand-tied finish | Garden, country house, classic and rustic | A flat bow adds a few millimetres |

## Wax seal wedding invitations

A wax seal is a small disc of wax pressed with a metal stamp, usually a monogram, initials or a botanical motif. Historically it sealed letters shut and proved who sent them. On a wedding invitation it’s mostly decorative, but it still does a job: it holds a vellum wrap closed, anchors a ribbon or twine, or sits on the envelope flap.

### Where does the wax seal go?

- **On a vellum wrap**, where the two edges meet. This is the most popular spot, and it keeps the seal inside the envelope, out of harm’s way in the post.
- **Over the knot of a ribbon or twine**, hiding the join and holding the bundle together.
- **On the envelope flap.** The classic look and the first thing guests see, but the most exposed to postal machines (more on that below).
- **On the RSVP or details card**, as a small decorative touch rather than a closure.

### Traditional wax vs self-adhesive wax seals

There are two ways to get a wax seal onto an invitation, and both use real wax. The difference is when the seal is made:

| | Traditional (poured) wax | Self-adhesive wax seals |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How it’s made | Wax is melted straight onto the paper and pressed with a stamp | Seals are poured and pressed in advance, then backed with adhesive |
| Applying it | Melt, pour, press, wait for it to set: one at a time | Peel and stick, so quick for big batches |
| Look | Every seal is slightly different, very handmade | Neat and consistent from first to last |
| Mess and risk | Hot wax can drip, scorch or soak into thin paper | No heat touches your stationery |
| In the post | Modern flexible sealing wax copes well; old brittle wax can crack | Usually flexible, and can be fixed where it sits safest |

Search for “wax seal stickers for wedding invitations” and you’ll find two quite different things: genuine self-adhesive wax seals, and flat printed stickers made to look like wax. The printed kind is fine for a budget, but it won’t have the raised, glossy edge that makes people run a thumb over it. If a listing doesn’t say real wax, ask.

On some suites you can choose your seal colour when you order, and personalised seals or different colours are available on request. If you’re planning to seal them yourself, our [step-by-step assembly guide](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-to-assemble-wedding-invitations) covers both methods.

## Choosing a wax seal colour

Softer seal colours have replaced the deep red of old letters. Pick a colour that already appears in your suite, such as your envelope, ribbon or the flowers in the design, rather than introducing something new. A few pairings that always work:

| Seal colour | Pairs beautifully with | Feels |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pearl or off-white | Every envelope colour, especially blue, midnight, fern and blush | Elegant and timeless |
| Blush pink | Ivory, oat or blush envelopes and pastel florals | Soft and romantic |
| Gold | Kraft, terracotta, ivy or midnight envelopes | Warm, autumnal or luxe |
| Lilac or a deeper colour | White or natural envelopes, picking out one flower in the design | Playful and personal |

Our [pastel wildflower invitation suite](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/wedding-invitations/pastel-wildflower-wedding-invitation-suite) lets you choose a **blush pink** or **pearl/off-white** seal when you order. Pearl is the safest choice if you’re undecided: it catches the light and sits happily on any of our twelve envelope colours.

## Vellum wedding invitations

Vellum was once fine calfskin; today the word means a smooth, translucent paper with a frosted look. Wrapped around an invitation, it softens the design underneath so guests catch a misty glimpse before they open it. It suits watercolour florals, fine-line botanicals and minimal designs especially well, because the colours glow through.

### Vellum jackets, wraps, belly bands and covers

You’ll see several names for vellum on wedding invitations, and makers don’t always use them the same way. Broadly:

- **Vellum jacket or wrap**: a sheet folded around the whole invitation (and often the inserts too), with the edges meeting at the front, held closed by a seal, ribbon or twine.
- **Vellum cover or overlay**: a single sheet laid over the front of the invitation, usually fixed at the top or tied in with ribbon.
- **Belly band**: a narrow strip around the middle of the stack. It can be vellum, paper or ribbon, and it’s the simplest way to hold several cards together.

Our [Grace wildflower invitation set](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/wedding-invitations/grace-wildflower-wedding-invitation-set) comes with a vellum jacket in the full suite, closed with ribbon or twine and a wax seal. Vellum jackets are also available on request with the [autumn barn owl invitation](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/shop/wedding-invitations/autumn-floral-barn-owl-wedding-invitation).

Vellum shows every fingerprint and any glue. Handle it with clean, dry hands, and hold it closed with a seal, ribbon or twine rather than glue or tape.

## Wedding invitations with ribbon

Ribbon is the easiest way to add colour without changing the design. It can tie the cards together, thread through the top of the invitation as a bow, or wrap around a vellum jacket. Most of all, it makes an invitation look and feel tied by hand.

### Satin or silk ribbon?

| | Satin ribbon | Silk (or silk-style chiffon) ribbon |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Look | Smooth, glossy, neat edges | Soft, matt, often with frayed hand-torn edges |
| Style | Classic, polished, formal | Relaxed, romantic, garden and boho |
| Bows | Holds a crisp, even bow | Drapes and floats, so better knotted loosely or wrapped |
| Best with | Oval frames, toile, monograms | Watercolour florals, wildflowers, vellum |

**Wedding invitations tied with ribbon** usually take one of three forms: a bow threaded through two small holes at the top, a ribbon wrapped around the whole stack and tied at the front or side, or a ribbon around a vellum jacket with a seal over the knot. Ivory, cream and dusty blue are the classics; peach, sage and lilac pick out wildflower colours. On our watercolour wildflower set you choose your ribbon colour when you send your details.

### Twine, string and gold clips

Twine gives the same tied look as ribbon in a more natural, rustic way, and it’s thinner, so it adds almost nothing to the thickness. A small gold or silver clip is the most understated option of all: it simply holds the RSVP and details card to the invitation. Our Grace and watercolour wildflower sets both include a silver or gold clip.

## Wedding invitations with ribbon and wax seal: how to combine them

Ribbon and a wax seal together is one of the most searched-for pairings, and for good reason: the seal hides the knot and the ribbon gives the seal something to sit on. The trick is to choose two or three finishes and let them share a colour. Three combinations we love:

- **Soft and romantic**: vellum jacket, twine and a pearl seal. The design glows through and the seal is the only solid colour.
- **Classic**: a satin bow in ivory, with a pearl seal on the envelope or the RSVP card. Clean, timeless and easy to post.
- **Warm and rustic**: twine or a gold clip, a gold seal and a kraft or terracotta envelope.

Signs you’ve gone a step too far:

- More than three colours across ribbon, seal and envelope.
- A seal, a bow, a clip and a belly band all on the front, competing for attention.
- A thick satin bow plus a seal plus vellum, which looks lovely but almost certainly posts as a Large Letter.
- Gold foil, a gold seal and a gold clip together. One gold detail is luxe; three can tip into busy.

## How wax seals, vellum and ribbon affect postage

This is the part most couples find out at the Post Office counter. A 5×7 invitation in its envelope fits Royal Mail’s **Letter** size, which allows up to 5 mm thick and 100 g. A wax seal alone is often 2–4 mm, and a bow sits on top of that, so a suite with a seal, ribbon and inserts can easily go over 5 mm and become a **Large Letter**, which costs more per stamp. Vellum and twine add very little. Our [wedding invitation cost guide](https://gracefulstudio.co.uk/journal/how-much-do-wedding-invitations-cost-uk#postage) explains how to work out the total.

### Do wax seals survive the post?

Usually, yes, especially when the seal sits **inside** the envelope on a vellum wrap or ribbon, cushioned by the card. A seal on the outside of the envelope takes more knocks from sorting machines, and brittle wax can crack or snap off. If you want one on the flap, choose flexible wax, make sure the envelope is sealed firmly underneath so nothing can catch, and post a test invitation to yourself first.

Assemble one complete invitation, with every card, seal and bow, and take it to the Post Office to be measured and weighed before you buy stamps for the lot.

Questions:

- **Do wax seals require extra postage in the UK?** Often, yes. A 5×7 invitation is normally a Letter, but Royal Mail’s Letter size allows only 5 mm of thickness. A wax seal with ribbon and inserts can push the envelope over that, making it a Large Letter. Weigh and measure one finished invitation at the Post Office first.
- **Do wax seals survive the post?** Usually. Seals placed inside the envelope, on a vellum wrap or ribbon, are well protected. Seals on the outside of the envelope are more exposed to sorting machines, and brittle wax can crack, so choose flexible wax if you want one on the flap.
- **What is the difference between self-adhesive wax seals and traditional wax seals?** Both are real wax. Traditional seals are melted and pressed directly onto the paper one at a time. Self-adhesive seals are made in advance and backed with adhesive, so you peel and stick them, which is quicker, cleaner and more consistent for large batches.
- **Where do you put a wax seal on a wedding invitation?** Most often where the edges of a vellum wrap meet, or over the knot of a ribbon or twine, which keeps it safely inside the envelope. You can also put it on the envelope flap or as a decoration on the RSVP or details card.
- **What colour wax seal should I choose for my wedding invitations?** Choose a colour already in your suite. Pearl or off-white suits every envelope colour, blush pink suits pastel and ivory suites, and gold suits autumn, kraft and dark envelopes. Some of our suites let you choose blush pink or pearl when you order.
- **What is a vellum wrap or vellum jacket on a wedding invitation?** It’s a sheet of translucent vellum paper folded around the invitation, and often the inserts, with the edges meeting at the front. It’s usually held closed with a wax seal, ribbon or twine, and gives guests a soft, misty first look at the design.
- **Should I choose satin or silk ribbon for wedding invitations?** Satin is smooth and glossy and holds a crisp bow, so it suits classic and formal designs. Silk or silk-style ribbon is soft, matt and often frayed at the edges, which suits relaxed, romantic and wildflower styles.
- **Can you have ribbon and a wax seal on the same invitation?** Yes, it’s one of the most popular combinations. Place the seal over the ribbon’s knot so it hides the join, and keep the ribbon, seal and envelope to two or three colours so the finished invitation looks considered rather than busy.
